To all our Mississippi Senior Olympics participants,
We want to thank each one for all your interest and involvement in the Mississippi Senior Olympics. We appreciate your patience during these trying times and with the many changes we have had to make to this year’s games.
After many discussions, it has been decided that the Mississippi Senior Olympics for 2020 has been cancelled. It was an extremely difficult decision but was based on the many unknowns from COVID-19 lingering around as well as the unavailability of facilities capable of hosting our events.
However, on a positive note, a letter dated May 14, 2020 from the National organization, states:
“If a state qualifying senior games in UNABLE to conduct Games or specific sports/event in 2020, athletes from that state’s senior games who qualified for the 2017 National Senior Games in Birmingham, AL and/or 2019 National Senior Games in Albuquerque, NM will qualify in the respective sports/events for the 2021 National Senior Games in Ft. Lauderdale, FL (i.e., qualifiers from 2016 and/or 2018 respective sports/events from that state’s senior games). Although, the number of registrants may be limited for certain sports.”
This means Nationals will allow athletes who qualified for the National Games in our last two qualification periods in 2016 and 2018 to enter. Please keep checking the open registration period for the 2021 National Games through their website, www.nsga.com, or their mail outs.
We have already begun planning for the 2021 Mississippi Senior Olympics and are excited for you to attend. As said earlier, this was an extremely difficult decision to make but feel it was a necessary one. We are currently exploring the refund options for those who had registered for this year’s games and will keep you updated. We appreciate your continued support and hope to see you soon.
